Project Activities
Beginning July’04, with the PfS Grant award, the
following additional activities occurred.
1. A
steering committee was reconvened, including the new project coordinator,
the FCFC Director and five members who were heavily involved in the
first phase. This group was established as a standing FCFC committee.
2. The steering committee met with PfS coach Erin
Galloway from Ohio State University’s Center for Learning Excellence
to discuss the PfS model and the PfS Academy’s role in technical
support and oversight. A first draft of Manual Worksheets #1 - #4 was
completed by the coordinator, reviewed by the Academy, and shared with
the steering committee.
3. Neighborhood meetings were re-established in the
targeted areas of West Akron, Lakemore and Barberton.
4. The steering committee reviewed the existing Needs
Assessment, Resource Assessment, Neighborhood Project report, and the
thirteen objectives established within the targeted outcomes.
5. The following four objectives were identified as
highest priority, and four workgroups were developed to study each-increase
reading proficiency, increase secondary school attendance, reduce delinquency
offenses, and reduce domestic violence offenses by juveniles.
6. On 11/17/04, a PfS Planning Workshop was conducted
for steering and workgroup committee members, by Dr. Julian and Erin
Galloway from the PfS Academy. A follow-up was held on 12/7/04.
7. The four workgroups met in Dec. ’04 and Jan ’05,
reviewing worksheets and the feedback from the reconvened neighborhood
meetings. Materials about Risk, Protection, and Assets were studied,
this is one important area that was omitted in the Jan. ’03-
June “04 stage. RPA’s were chosen and prioritized for the
three targeted outcomes.
8. Worksheets 1-4 were revamped. The four workgroups
agreed that the best strategy would be to prioritize one targeted outcome
to take through the formal PfS process.
9. The workgroups recommended that Increased School
Success be chosen. The groups also felt that the violence and delinquency
groups should continue to meet and work on potential strategies for
those issues.
10. The steering committee met on 1/18/05 and agreed
to take Increased School Success through the PfS process.
11. Agencies that did not respond to the initial resource
survey were re-contacted. The few respondents were added to the resource
data.
12. Resources related to school success, especially
those considered evidence based, were revisited. Additional information
was compiled and discussed in workgroups.
13. A logic model planning session with steering committee
and workgroup members focused on School Success, particularly Project
Grad as our highest priority strategy.
