Newborn Home Visits

A free home visit by a registered nurse is offered to all first time and teen parents in Summit County. This visit gives parents a chance to have their questions answered, have their baby weighed, and check the baby's and mother's health. The nurse offers a listening ear and helpful information during this wonderful, exciting, confusing and challenging time.

Specialized Services for Children with Special Needs

START ON TRACK

Newborn Home Visits that are offered through Help Me Grow are free and completed by a registered nurse to all first time and teen parents living in Summit County.  At the hospital, you may give permission for a home visit by a registered nurse.  Shortly after you leave the hospital, the nurse will call to schedule a visit.

The Home Visit Includes:

  • Weighing the baby
  • Checking the baby's and the mother's health
  • Answering questions about newborn care
  • Offering helpful tips about feeding, baby growth, and creating a healthy and safe environment for the baby.
  • Linking your family to community resources
  • Promoting literacy

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A NEWBORN HOME VISIT?

The Newborn Home Visit is a great way for parents to have their questions answered in the comfort of their own home. A visit from the nurse can help ease the transition and link you to valuable resources, while supporting today's parents.

Every child is different and unique, but there are general milestones in development. Here are some of those milestones for the first nine months of a baby's development from the Ohio Department of Health, Bureau of Early Intervention Services.

One Month

Four Months
  • Raises head slightly off floor when lying on stomach
  • Good head control
  • Rolls from side to side
  • Holds head up momentarily
  • Takes object when held near hand
  • Briefly watches and follows object
  • Follows a moving object with eyes
  • Some "noise in throat" sounds
  • Laughs aloud
   
Two Months Six Months
  • Holds head up, bobbing
  • Sits with little support
  • Follows moving person with eyes
  • Rolls from back to stomach
  • Responds to smiling person with occasional smile
  • Transfers object from hand to hand and to mouth
  • Vocalizes
  • Babbles more than two sounds
   
Three Months Nine Months
  • Lifts head and chest when lying on stomach
  • Sits alone
  • Head control is improving
  • Changes position without falling
  • Recognizes breast or bottle
  • Plays with 2 objects at the same time
  • Coos, chuckles
  • Says mama-baba-dada
